Bruce Gilden is an American street photographer known for his raw and confrontational style that captures the essence of city life. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1946, Gilden developed an interest in photography in his late teens and later studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He gained recognition for his close-up, flash photography of people on the streets of New York, a technique that has become his signature style. His work often focuses on society's underbelly, capturing compelling images of people who are generally overlooked or marginalized.
Gilden has received several awards, including the European Publishers Award for Photography and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He became a full member of the Magnum Photos agency in 1998. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums worldwide, and he has published several books, including "Facing New York" and "Coney Island."
