Ambrosius Benson (c. 1495–1550) was an Italian-born painter who became a prominent figure in the Northern Renaissance art scene in Bruges, Belgium. Originally from Lombardy, Italy, Benson moved to Bruges where he became a master in the Guild of St. Luke and worked in the workshop of Gerard David. He gained recognition for his religious panels and portraits, often characterized by their meticulous detail, rich coloration, and intricate landscapes.
Benson's work is noted for its blend of Italian Renaissance influences with the more detailed and naturalistic tendencies of Northern European art. His religious works often feature serene yet emotionally charged figures set against complex backgrounds, while his portraits are celebrated for their psychological depth and realism.
