Alfred Henry Maurer (1868–1932) was an American modernist painter known for his contributions to early American modernism and for his transition from realism to a more avant-garde style. Born in New York City, Maurer initially gained recognition for his realist portraits and was the youngest artist to have a work acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, a trip to Paris in 1897 profoundly influenced his artistic direction, leading him to embrace Fauvism and Cubism.
Maurer's later work is characterized by its bold use of color, abstract forms, and a departure from traditional compositional techniques. His paintings often feature still lifes, landscapes, and figures, executed with a sense of emotional intensity and a focus on formal elements.
