Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917) was an American painter known for his poetic and often mystical works that defied the artistic norms of his time. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Ryder moved to New York City in his early twenties, where he studied at the National Academy of Design. He became associated with the group of artists known as the Tonalists, although his work also exhibited elements of Romanticism and Symbolism.
Ryder's paintings are characterized by their moody atmospheres, dark tonalities, and dreamlike quality. He often chose themes from literature, mythology, and religious texts, rendering them in a highly personal and emotional style. His works, such as "The Race Track (Death on a Pale Horse)," are considered masterpieces of American art, admired for their depth of feeling and technical innovation.
