His paintings are characterized by their loose brushwork, vibrant colors, and attention to light and atmosphere. He was particularly fond of painting New York City, and many of his paintings depict the city's streets, landmarks, and skyscrapers. Wiggins was also a member of the Old Lyme Art Colony, a group of American painters who were active in the early 20th century.
Wiggins was a talented artist who was recognized for his work early in his career. In 1903, when he was just 20 years old, his painting Winter, Fifth Avenue was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
