Talented American street artist and graffiti-inspired neo-expressionist Jean-Michel Basquiat lived fast and died young, at only 27 (1960-1988).
Basquiat created his work with whatever materials were at hand, including spray paint and acrylic paint, and found objects like doors and pieces of broken furniture. Basquiat's visual style is based on repetition, layering, and deconstruction of language and imagery, with references to his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage and African American history and culture. He was the youngest artist ever to be included in the Whitney Biennial.
