Hiroshi Sugimoto (born 1948) is a Japanese photographer renowned for his long-exposure photographic series that explore themes of time, memory, and the metaphysical. Born in Tokyo, Sugimoto moved to the United States to study fine arts and photography, where he developed his signature style.
Sugimoto's work often involves capturing subjects such as seascapes, theaters, and architectural structures in a way that transcends temporal limitations. His "Seascapes" series, for example, consists of images of water and sky, taken at various locations around the world, all appearing timeless and serene. Another well-known series, "Theaters," features photographs of movie theaters and drive-ins with the film screen appearing as a pure white light, creating a surreal and meditative effect. Sugimoto's ability to blend technical precision with philosophical inquiry has made him one of the most respected and influential contemporary photographers.
