Catherine Opie is an American photographer known for her documentary-style images that explore issues of identity, community, and social norms. After studying photography at the San Francisco Art Institute, Opie often focused her work on marginalized or subcultural communities. Her subjects have included drag queens, transgender men and women, surfers, and football players. She is also known for her portraits of artists and cultural figures, including David Hockney, Cindy Sherman, and Elizabeth Taylor.
Opie is openly gay, and her work often explores issues of gender and sexuality.
Interesting fact: in 2019, Opie was chosen to be one of the official White House photographers during the Obama administration.
