About:

Brothers Grimm

German Storytellers

b.

17851786

18631859

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm, were German scholars, philologists, and folklorists who gained worldwide fame for compiling and popularizing European folk and fairy tales. Born in the late 18th century in Hanau, Germany, they were part of a family of six children. Jacob was the elder of the two and was born in 1785, while Wilhelm was born in 1786. They initially studied law but became deeply interested in folklore and linguistics, which led them to collect and publish their first volume of "Children's and Household Tales" in 1812. This collection included now-iconic stories like "Cinderella," "Snow White," and "Hansel and Gretel."

The Brothers Grimm were not just storytellers; they were also pioneering linguists. Jacob Grimm is particularly known for Grimm's Law, a set of rules describing the historical shifts in the phonology of Indo-European languages. Wilhelm, on the other hand, focused more on the literary and folkloric aspects of their work.
