Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist and collagist born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1945. She gained prominence in the early 1980s for her layered photographs featuring black-and-white images overlaid with declarative captions set in white-on-red Futura Bold Oblique font. Kruger's work delves into issues of identity, consumerism, feminism, and social critique, often appropriating images from mainstream media to challenge cultural assumptions and question the viewer's passive acceptance of traditional social norms.
