Arthur Dove (1880–1946) was an American modernist painter, often credited as one of the pioneers of abstract art in the United States. Born in Canandaigua, New York, Dove initially studied architecture at Cornell University before turning to painting. He spent several years in Europe, where he was exposed to the works of European modernists, which had a profound influence on his artistic development. Upon returning to the U.S., he became associated with Alfred Stieglitz's 291 Gallery, a hub for modernist art in America.
Dove's work is characterized by its focus on abstraction and the natural world, often using organic forms and colors to evoke landscapes and natural phenomena. His innovative use of materials, including wax emulsion and metallic paint, added texture and depth to his compositions. Dove was also known for his "object portraits," abstract works that captured the essence of everyday objects.
