Arnold Newman (1918–2006) was an American photographer, widely recognized for pioneering the genre of environmental portraiture. Born in New York City, Newman studied art at the University of Miami but had to leave due to financial constraints. He began his career as a portrait photographer in Philadelphia and later moved to New York, where he gained prominence for his portraits of artists, politicians, and other public figures. His work appeared in major publications such as Life, Look, and Harper's Bazaar, and he received numerous assignments from corporate clients as well.
Newman's environmental portraiture was groundbreaking in its approach, as he chose to photograph his subjects in their natural settings—be it their workplace, home, or studio—rather than in a neutral studio environment. This approach allowed him to capture not just the likeness but also the essence and environment of the subject, offering a more comprehensive portrayal.
