Antonello da Messina (c. 1430–1479) was an Italian Renaissance painter hailing from Messina, Sicily. He is best known for introducing oil painting techniques to Italy, which he likely learned from Early Netherlandish painters. Antonello's work is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail, realistic portraiture, and the innovative use of oil glazes to achieve depth and luminosity. His most famous work, the "San Cassiano Altarpiece," was groundbreaking for its time and showcased his mastery of perspective and light.
Throughout his career, Antonello da Messina had a significant influence on Venetian painting, and his techniques were adopted by prominent artists like Giovanni Bellini. His works often feature religious themes, but it is his portraiture that has garnered the most attention for its psychological depth and realism.
