Antanas Sutkus (born 1939) is a Lithuanian photographer renowned for his black-and-white portraits and social documentary work. Born in Kluoniškiai, Lithuania, Sutkus developed an interest in photography at a young age and went on to study journalism at Vilnius University. He is a co-founder of the Lithuanian Association of Art Photographers and has been a significant figure in shaping Lithuanian photography since the 1960s. Sutkus is best known for his extensive series "People of Lithuania," a decades-long project that aimed to create a comprehensive photographic portrait of his homeland and its inhabitants.
Sutkus' work is characterized by its humanistic approach and keen observational skills. He often captures candid moments that reveal the essence of his subjects, whether they are children, elderly people, or notable figures like Jean-Paul Sartre.
