André de Dienes (1913–1985) was a Romanian-American photographer best known for his early portraits of Marilyn Monroe before she rose to stardom. Born in Transylvania, Romania, de Dienes moved to Paris at a young age to pursue a career in art and photography. He initially worked as a freelance photographer for various European publications before relocating to New York City in 1938. There, he worked for Esquire, Vogue, and Life magazines, among others, before eventually moving to Hollywood to focus on glamour photography.
De Dienes' work is characterized by its emotional intensity and a focus on the natural beauty of his subjects. He often shot in outdoor settings, using natural light to create a sense of intimacy and spontaneity. In addition to his iconic images of Marilyn Monroe, de Dienes also gained recognition for his nude studies and experimental work with abstract forms and light.
