Alison Bechdel (born 1960) is an American cartoonist and author known for her groundbreaking contributions to contemporary comics and graphic novels. Born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, Bechdel gained fame for her long-running comic strip "Dykes to Watch Out For," which ran from 1983 to 2008. The strip was one of the first to focus on the lives and relationships of lesbian characters, and it played a significant role in bringing LGBTQ+ narratives to a broader audience.
Bechdel's graphic memoir "Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic" (2006) further solidified her reputation as a leading voice in graphic literature. The memoir explores her relationship with her father, her coming out as a lesbian, and her family's complex dynamics. "Fun Home" was critically acclaimed and later adapted into a successful Broadway musical.
