Alexandre Calame (1810–1864) was a Swiss landscape painter who gained prominence for his depictions of the Swiss Alps and other natural scenes. Born in Vevey, Switzerland, Calame initially trained as a bank engraver before turning his focus to painting. He studied under various masters and eventually opened his own studio in Geneva. His work was widely exhibited, both in Switzerland and abroad, and he became one of the leading figures in the Swiss Romantic school of painting.
Calame's art is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail, atmospheric lighting, and a deep sense of reverence for nature. He often painted en plein air, capturing the grandeur and majesty of the landscapes he encountered. His works were not merely representations of nature but also imbued with emotional and symbolic undertones, often evoking a sense of awe and tranquility.
