Alberto Burri (1915-1995) was an Italian abstract painter and sculptor, renowned for his innovative use of unconventional materials and techniques. Born in Città di Castello, Italy, Burri initially trained as a physician and served as a medical officer during World War II. After being taken as a prisoner of war by the Allies, he began painting and subsequently decided to pursue art as his vocation.
Burri's work is characterized by its tactile quality and exploration of texture, often incorporating materials like burlap, plastic, tar, and metal into his compositions. His series such as "Sacco" (sacks), "Combustione" (combustion), and "Ferro" (iron) challenged traditional notions of painting by transforming everyday materials into expressive works of art. Burri's approach to abstraction was deeply influenced by his experiences during the war, and his work often evokes themes of destruction, repair, and transformation.
