Agnes Lawrence Pelton (1881-1961) was an American modernist painter known for her abstract compositions that often explored spiritual and metaphysical themes. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, to American parents, Pelton later moved to the United States and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She initially gained recognition for her landscape and portrait work but eventually shifted her focus to abstraction.
Pelton's abstract paintings are characterized by their luminous color palettes, ethereal forms, and a sense of serene transcendence. Inspired by her interest in Theosophy and other spiritual philosophies, her work often aims to capture the essence of inner enlightenment and cosmic harmony. While she was contemporaneous with the American Abstract Artists group, Pelton chose a more introspective and spiritual path, often working in isolation in Cathedral City, California.
